Dog Getting Blood | Albuquerque, NM | St. Francis Animal Clinic
  • Blood Work & Diabetes Mgmt

BLOOD WORK: By utilizing in-house and reference laboratories, St. Francis can offer a wide range of blood work. Some of the most common are:

    • Complete Blood Count (CBC) and chemistry profile – These blood tests are typically used to evaluate an animal's health prior to anesthesia or surgery and to help diagnose illness. They can provide information concerning several body functions. A CBC test can help identify if an animal is fighting an infection, is dehydrated, or is anemic. The chemistry profile is useful in providing general information regarding the status of numerous organs, including the liver, kidneys, and pancreas, as well as providing information regarding blood sugar levels as well as those of several electrolytes.
    • Thyroid – Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism. If the thyroid is not working properly, it can result in a hormone imbalance which has the potential to cause numerous issues. A thyroid level test helps determine if the thyroid gland is functioning properly.
    • Heartworm – A test that can determine if your animal is infected with parasitic worms or their larvae.
    • DIABETES: Diabetes is a disease in which the animal's blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels are too high. Diabetes can cause eye, kidney, and nerve damage, as well as lead to heart disease and other complications. The skilled veterinarians at St. Francis can diagnose diabetes and help control your pet's disease.

The disease impacts both cats and dogs and has the potential to cause medical problems which can affect the lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys. Using a small amount of your pet's blood, a quick in-house test can determine if your animal is infected. Suppose it is determined that your animal is heartworm-free. In that case, prevention can easily be accomplished by giving your monthly pet medication.
